But trust isn’t something that happens in a vacuum; it takes time, commitment, and dedication. When you have a trustworthy business, it creates relationships that have stability and respect.

When you want to build trust with yourself and be trusted by others, you have to be accountable in all areas of your life, and the same goes for building a trustworthy business. Too often businesses ask themselves ‘how can we convince buyers we are trustworthy?’ When the real question they should be asking is, ‘how can our organization become trustworthy?’

What can I do to convince customers that I have a trustworthy business?

Building a trustworthy business happens through being honest, keeping your commitments, and being trustworthy. Your business becomes trustworthy through reliable behavior that is accumulated over time.

Be Honest

If you want your business to be trustworthy, you must be honest. Even if the outcome will not be in your favor, if you want to build a trustworthy business, you have to be honest and tell the truth. Part of being honest with your business is being transparent. Recognize both your strengths and your weaknesses. If, or usually when, you make a mistake, admit it. Take responsibility for the actions of your business without blaming others. If a customer is looking to buy a product or service that isn’t right for them, be honest with them, and help them find a better fit for their needs. By putting your customers above your bottom line, you’re demonstrating that you honestly care about them and their needs. Your willingness to help them will go a long way towards building a trustworthy business.

Keep Your Commitments

You’re probably familiar with the phrase ‘under promise and over deliver.’ This piece of business advice is oft-repeated for a very important reason; people respect those who do what they say they are going to do. Keeping your commitments, being reliable with yourself, employees, coworkers, and customers is at the heart of building a trustworthy business.

Don’t make promises that you can’t keep. Reliable employees show up on time, meet deadlines, and contribute to the workplace. In the same way, reliable businesses need to do what they say they will do. If you make an appointment, schedule a meeting, or say that you will be somewhere, be there. If you have announced a launch date for a new product, make sure it’s ready on time. Reliability means doing what you said you would do and is frequently built one small action at a time.

Build products and services that are reliable as well. A reliable product is one that provides a consistent, predictable experience for customers. It does what it should do, each and every time you use it. You can expect a hammer to hammer nails, a clamp to hold two pieces of wood together, and an envelope to safely contain a letter. Following through, being reliable, and seeing things through is a hallmark of being a trustworthy person or business.

Be Trustworthy

A trustworthy leader, a trustworthy business, is one that you can rely on. Trustworthy leaders speak confidently, and they tell the truth, even when it’s difficult. Even in hard situations, when you know others will disagree, being truthful is a key component to being trustworthy. While being truthful may be hard in that moment, it will be beneficial in the long run because it will set you apart, and those around you will know that you can be trusted to speak the truth.

Being trustworthy isn’t a destination, it isn’t something that you can earn and then stop doing. It’s habits, behaviors, and authenticity that have to be constantly repeated in order to remain trustworthy. The most trustworthy people commit to being honest, keeping their commitments, telling the truth, and building trust in their relationships. Becoming a trustworthy business is hard work, but it is also a valuable asset to your company.
